Join UCSD Rotaract at UC San Diego for their 11th Annual WAPI project for their annual service project to create Water Pasteurization Indicators to help communities in need. Pizza lunch provided. There is a short presentation about WAPI's at 10am that is interesting to watch. There is an exact map of the bldg in the link where you RSVP in the QR code. January 25th (Sunday), 2026 Location: UCSD, Great Hall in ERC's I-House. Located directly across Scholar's Lane from Pangea Parking Structure. Visitor Parking:
Pangea Parking Structure is $4.50/hr (maximum of $9)
FREE OPTION: There is normally parking at Gliderport or the road loeading down to it. Would be about a 10-15 minute walk from Gliderport to Great Hall.
What is a WAPI? WAPIs (Water Pasteurization Indicators) are reusable devices specifically designed to melt a wax coating inside the device when water has reached pasteurization temperature and is safe to drink. In some areas of the world, people collect water from natural sources, which are often ridden with disease-causing bacteria. To prevent getting sick, the water is typically boiled prior to drinking/using. However, water does not need to be boiled in order to be safe to drink, because pasteurization (the act of using heat to kill off the dangerous bacteria) occurs at 150° F, a much lower temperature than water's boiling point (212° F). Therefore, a lot of time and resources, such as fuel and wood, are wasted when water is brought to the boiling point, rather than the pasteurization point. This is where the WAPI comes in. A WAPI contains a special wax that melts at 150° and indicates when the water is safe to drink. Thus, WAPIs help communities lacking easy access to clean, drinkable water save time, money, and energy, by indicating when their water is safe to drink, before it boils! Contact us at secretary@rotaractucsd.org, if you have any question/concerns/comments. |

Following the in-court observation and presentation, Rotarian Kathleen Walford will take us on a guided historical walking tour of the Federal Judicial Center which encompasses three buildings on the downtown campus. Because we will be observing an actual criminal calendar, we will need to gather down-town at the corner of Front St and Broadway by 8:30 a.m. to get through the screening process. Because most people don’t like to drive downtown ,and parking is always a challenge, we will travel by trolley from the El Cajon Station located at 325 South Marshal St, on the ORANGE LINE leaving at 7:33 a.m |

Our club is being offered a unique invitation to visit the federal court in San Diego, observe criminal court proceedings and then discuss the process with United States District Judge Janis Sammartino. Judge Sammartino has served on the federal bench since 2007, prior to which she was a San Diego Superior Court Judge. Judge Sammartino chairs the Community Outreach Committee for CASD and has also served in this same role for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
